The last of their species live only in the heart of Africa - in the region where three countries meet, Rwanda, Uganda and the Congo - for no zoo in the world can boast of being able to show its visitors mountain gorillas. These gentle giants are protected in their habitat at the foot of the Virunga volcanic mountains by national parks, yet fierce civil wars have been raging in this region since 1994 - for the longest time in the Congo. One of the first casualties of war is usually the conservation of nature. The international organizations had to pack their bags, soldiers and refugees roamed through the land and poaching increased. Many people believed that this might be the end of the mountain gorillas, for most of these animals live on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, particularly on the Congolese side. At the beginning of this year the nightmare finally seemed to have ended, and nature conservationists throughout the world were on tenterhooks to see how the mountain gorillas had survived the upheavals of the civil war. Together with the Africa representative of the Zoological Society in Frankfurt, a team from Bayerischer Rundfunk was the first foreign group in five years to travel through the gorilla area in the Congo. The film gives an interim report on how the animals have survived the years between the front lines - for it is still not clear whether the nightmare for people and animals is finally over.
