Female Polygamy - In search of the "modern" Woman in Turkey

Over a million people are thought to be living in polygamy in Turkey. Especially in the rural East of the country, patriarchal polygamy is socially legitimized and deeply rooted in Islamic religion. In the 4th Sura, Verse 3, the Qur'an states that a man may wed up to four women, or, if he is wealthy enough, as many women as he wants.

The filmmaker embarks on an adventurous journey through Istanbul and southeastern Anatolia, and finds that centuries-old values still persevere in Turkish heads and beds. The notion of romantic love and marriage as we know it in the West plays little role here. The man is the breadwinner and patriarch, the man of the house, whose first task is to make sure his multiple wives and children are financially secure. And what do the women want? Do they want a patriarch or a lover - or both? What if a faithful Muslim woman, rich and attractive, were to claim the same privilege and marry four men? Would she be cast out of society? The filmmaker sets out on the grotesque search for a polygamous woman in an ultraconservative country.


Mehr als eine Million Menschen in der Türkei leben nach Schätzungen in polygamen Verhältnissen. Hauptsächlich im Osten des Landes hat die patriarchale Polygamie eine gesellschaftliche Legitimation, die vor allem in der islamischen Religion begründet ist.
Im Koran - Sure 4, Vers 3 - steht, dass der Mann bis zu vier Frauen ehelichen darf bzw. sich, wenn er reich ist, so viele Frauen nehmen kann, wie er will.

Die Filmautorin begibt sich auf eine abenteuerliche Reise nach Südostanatolien und Istanbul und kommt zu der erschreckenden Einsicht, dass in den Köpfen und Betten noch immer jahrhundertealte Vorstellungen regieren. Die Idee einer romantischen Ehe - wie man ihr im Westen begegnet - hat dort nicht viel Raum. Der Mann in seiner klassischen Rolle als Versorger und Erzieher, als der ,ewige Vater', muss dafür sorgen, dass seine vielen Frauen und Kinder wirtschaftlich abgesichert sind. Und was wollen Frauen? Suchen sie den Vater oder den Liebhaber - oder beides? Wie wäre es, wenn die gläubige Muslimin, reich und erotisch, das gleiche Recht für sich in Anspruch nähme und vier Männer heiratete? Würde sie gesellschaftlich geächtet werden? Die Filmemacherin begibt sich auf die groteske Suche nach einer polygamen Frau in einem ultrakonservativen Land.
