Hardly anyone in Brazil knows the "gorillas of the new world", the milky-coffee coloured muriqui monkeys with their black tails. 20 years ago Professor Karin Strier started a research project on this almost extinct species. What began as a post-graduate thesis, has now become her life's work. When she is not holding lectures, she is on the trail of the muriqui together with her students. The original habitat of these animals was once the entire Atlantic rainforest of Brazil, of which only 5% now remains. In the insular fragment of forest around the research station of Caratinga lives a group of muriqui who have been under constant observation for years. It soon became obvious that the muriqui males are very special monkeys: like the hippies among the primates they form male communities without aggression, with equal rights, and they remain peaceful even when sex is involved. The muriqui females are in charge and so the males have no choice but to stick together... This film by Andrea Rüthlein shows how, in 20 years of research work, Karin Strier has managed to come as close as possible to a group of wild muriqui monkeys without restricting their freedom.
