As far as the eye can see - nothing but animals, a vast, never-ending herd. In the plains of Ndutu, in the south of the Serengeti, when the largest animal migration in the world makes a stopover, the grass is hardly visible beneath the surging bodies of the animals. Over 1.4 million quadrupeds are constantly on the move: gnus, followed by zebras and Thomson's gazelles. Here in the lowlands they give birth to their young. In May they move on, always following the rain, always in search of fresh grass. En route they have to cross rivers, the most dangerous being the Mara on the border of Tanzania and Kenya. Felix Heidinger observed the endless migration of the gnus and their attempt to cross the river.
