Bush Dogs are becoming rare not only in their natural habitat in South America, but in zoos as well. There is not enough fresh blood left to breed them successfully. So Brazilian and European breeders and zookeepers have launched an ambitious program to exchange prized females and secure the future of the species. There is only one suitable female left in Germany scheduled to make the voyage: Her name is John Boya, she hails from one of the last great Bush Dog families in German zoos. But she is still too young to make the trip to Brazil, where they are searching desperately for females. Ever since his mate died a few months ago, the male Charles lives all by himself in a large wildlife reservation in the south of Brazil, and hasn't taken well to solitude. Since John Boya is too young, another mate needs to be found: Olivia, from the zoo in Rio de Janeiro. Her arrival is observed tensely, for Olivia not only has to get adjusted to a new mate, but also to life in the wild. The São Paulo zoo has two lonely bachelors as well, who were kept illegally and discovered. Now they need mates. Maybe it will even be John Boya, who has now matured enough to make the trip from Krefeld to São Paulo. Their priceless genes may help create a stable population in zoos around the world again and help save the species.
