Everyone knows the pyramids, the legendary gold mask of Tutanch-Amun or one of the numerous preserved mummies. These relics of a civilization which existed about 5000 years ago are, nevertheless, still surrounded by numerous unsolved questions.
Many of the mysterious phenomena of ancient Egyptian culture are connected to religious ideals which seem very strange to us today. Using contemporary sources such as the Egyptian Book of the Dead the film seeks new approaches in attempting to understand the legacy of Pharaonic Egypt, in the context of its age, from the burial sites of the ancient realm in the north to the mysterious pyramid fields in the Sudanese desert.Die Pyramiden, die legendäre Goldmaske Tut-anch-Amuns oder eine der zahlreichen erhaltenen Mumien kennt jeder. Diese Relikte einer vor etwa 5000 Jahren entstandenen Hochkultur sind ungeachtet ihres Bekanntheitsgrades nach wie vor mit zahlreichen ungeklärten Fragen verbunden.
Hinter vielen rätselhaften Erscheinungen der altägyptischen Kultur stehen Glaubensvorstellungen, die uns heute sehr fremd erscheinen. Mittels zeitgenössischer Quellen wie dem Ägyptischen Totenbuch sucht der Film neue Ansatzpunkte, um die Zeugnisse des pharaonischen Ägypten von den Grabanlagen des Alten Reiches im Norden bis zu den rätselhaften Pyramidenfeldern in der sudanesischen Wüste aus seiner Zeit heraus zu verstehen.This series portrays landscapes, metropoles, sacred sites and monuments, all of which have made a unique contribution to the cultural heritage of mankind. Each episode breathes life into civilizations which thrived in the past ten thousand years, some of them then vanishing without a trace into the shadows of history. The films describe epochs whose legacy lingers in the perceptions and ideas of our own age, and cult sites which have managed to preserve their religious and cultural power up to the present day.
