Marsupials live on the Australian continent - by no means only kangaroos but also an abundance of other animal species including predators. The largest of these, the Tasmanian devil and the Tasmanian tiger already existed only on Tasmania 200 years ago. The island had been separated from the mother-continent Australia due to the rising sea-level 12,000 years ago. This separation from the continent made possible the development of a unique nature on Tasmania, and many animals, long since extinct on the Australian mainland, were able to survive here. But when the white settlers from England and Ireland came, Tasmania's nature underwent drastic changes. Many marsupial species such as kangaroos, wallabies and wombats were greatly reduced, but the largest predator, the Tasmanian tiger, was actually exterminated. Its closest relative, the Tasmanian devil, was just able to survive. Today it, too, is threatened by extinction. Yet in contrast to the pioneering age 100 years ago, people nowadays are trying to preserve this species.
