At the Oxen Inn, Philipino cook Joy Weniger lies in a pool of blood - apparently she slipped on eggs and died as a result of her injury. Two rival innkeepers mourn the dead person: Freddy, who owns the posh Deer's Inn and Alfons, owner of the Oxen Inn, who supposedly had an affair with Joy Weniger. After a turbulent night Alfons is also found dead. The prime suspect is Joy's son Urs, who despised Alfons. The police force's job is no easy matter. The canton border to Solothurn runs right through the village, which curtails the officers' efficiency. Fortunately, Luc Conrad need not bother himself  with such details. He is assisted by Erika, who seems to know everyone in town.
