On the outskirts of Nairobi, the capital of Kenia, lives Daphne Sheldrick, an Englishwoman who has become famous due to a remarkable project: for some 30 years now she has been taking care of orphaned elephants whose mothers died in accidents or were killed by ivory hunters. Without their mothers small elephants are normally doomed since they have to be suckled until their second year. For the first years of their life the elephant foundlings stay in Daphne Sheldrick's orphanage, tended day and night by her helpers. After about two years they come to Sheldrick's "kindergarten" in the Tsavo National Park, where the animals, meanwhile half-grown, are slowly reintroduced to the wild herds. At some point they all return to where they belong - in the wild. Over 40 orphaned elephants have thus been reintegrated in wild herds. The film documents the life's work of an exceptional woman, whose commitment over decades to the cause of endangered species is now finally receiving high praise and recognition.
