632 years lie between the beginning of the building of the cathedral and its completion in 1880. On August 15th the foundation stone was laid for this cathedral of the century.The Old Cathedral from the Carolingian Age - the official church of the Archbishop of Cologne - had been demolished to make space for the new cathedral. Master Gerhard designed a cathedral which surpassed all others in its dimensions. By the beginning of the 16th century the first building phase was completed. Then, however, building came to a standstill for 300 years due to lack of money and donations. Not until the beginning of the 19th century was it possible to redraft the plans, for the original ones had been destroyed or lost - then after only 38 years of construction Cologne Cathedral was finished. On October 15th 1880, this awe-inspiring work of architecture was completed when the finial was put on the south tower. Since 1996 the colossus on the Rhine has been a World Heritage Site. 632 Jahre vergingen vom Baubeginn bis zur Vollendung des Doms im Jahre 1880. Am 15. August 1248 wurde der Grundstein für die Jahrhundert-Kathedrale gelegt. Vorher wurde der Alte Dom zu Köln aus der karolingischen Zeit - die Amtskirche des Kölner Erzbischofs - abgerissen, um dem neuen Dom Platz zu machen. Meister Gerhard entwarf einen Dom, der in seinen Ausmaßen jede andere Kathedrale übertrifft. Zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts ist die erste Bauphase des Doms abgeschlossen. Doch durch fehlende Gelder und Spenden ruht der Dombau über 300 Jahre. Erst Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts gelingt es, das Bauwerk zu zeichnen, da die Unterlagen zerstört oder unauffindbar sind, und nach nur 38 Jahren Bauzeit ist der Kölner Dom fertiggestellt. Am 15. Oktober 1880 wird das architektonische Wunderwerk mit dem Aufsetzen der Kreuzblume auf den Südturm vollendet. Seit 1996 zählt der Koloss am Rhein zum Weltkulturerbe.
