Chief Inspector Von Meuffels is faced with a baffling murder inquiry. Working with him is the highly experienced Constanze Herrman, recently returned to the force after a prolonged absence. Despite being a formidable team, they can make no headway on the case. All the likely suspects have cast-iron alibis, none of their suspicions yield any leads and the body of evidence as a whole is woefully insufficient.

Chief Inspector Hanns von Meuffels is called to a bizarre crime scene in the Munich hinterland. Two hurriedly heaped-up graves have been found in a clearing in the woods, holding the remains of the owner of a local furniture manufacturing company and her lapdog, both of whom have been murdered. The victim's ex-husband, Peter Brauer, is soon the focus of the investigations. Since he quit the company, the once flourishing business has been in a constant state of decline. Indeed, so has he. The dead woman was not particularly popular with her workforce either - especially since it had become known that she wanted to sell the firm to foreign investors. For this case, Von Meuffels is partnered up with experienced detective Constanze Herrmann, who after a personal tragedy and a prolonged absence from the force is trying to get back into the rhythm of everyday working life. The pair make little progress: All of the likely suspects have cast-iron alibis. The few suspicious facts they do find yield no solid leads and the body of evidence proves wholly insufficient. The detectives end up going round in circles with no resolution in sight.
