For over 1000 years pilgrims have been flocking to Chartres. It is not the city which attracts them, but the Cathedral of Notre Dame. Then as now it fascinates people, albeit for different reasons. When it was built people saw it as a holy place, a place which promised blessing, hope and relief from the trials and tribulations of life. At that time the faithful understood its message immediately, for them the cathedral was a picture book. For people in the 20th century it is an over-dimensional edifice of stone, a closed book. They have to learn to decipher laboriously, letter by letter, what it has to say.

Seit weit mehr als 1000 Jahren reißt der Pilgerstrom nach Chartres nicht ab. Es zieht ihn nicht in die Stadt, sondern zur Kathedrale Notre Dame. Damals wie heute fasziniert sie die Menschen, wenn auch aus unterschiedlichen Gründen. Für den Menschen ihrer Entstehungszeit war sie ein heiliger Ort, ein Ort, der Segen, Hoffnung und Linderung der Mühsal des Lebens versprach. Die Gläubigen in ihrer Entstehungszeit konnten ihre Aussagen noch deuten, für sie war die Kathedrale ein Bilderbuch. Für die Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts ist sie ein überdimensionales, Stein gewordenes Buch mit sieben Siegeln. Sie müssen erst wieder mühsam Buchstabe für Buchstabe lernen zu entziffern, was sie sagen will.

Anhand der bewegten Bildsprache und der faszinierenden Architektur dieser Kirche entsteht das lebendige Bild einer Zeit, die man auch deshalb das dunkle Mittelalter nannte, weil es sich einem allgemeinen Verständnis so lange verschloß. Kaum ein anderes Gebäude eignet sich besser, Licht in dieses Dunkel zu bringen als gerade diese Kathedrale.
