Italy's Apennines in the late 19th century. Two boys, bound by an indissoluble brotherly love, grow up carefree and happy in the midst of nature - until the day their mother dies and their father sells everything he owns to offer a horse to each of his sons. The boys learn to master and love their horses, and soon the brothers are young men. While one yearns to see the world beyond the mountains, the other wants to breed horses and live with the girl he loves. The brothers discover that to realize their dreams, they must pay a high price, risk their lives, and redeem themselves by helping one another. What they don't know yet is that the biggest sacrifice they must make is to say goodbye ...
Entirely shot in rugged and majestic rural locations in Italy's Abruzzi and Tuscany regions, "Horses" is a kind of timeless, classical fairy tale about growing up, learning to cope with loss, accepting responsibility, and realizing one's dreams. Flanking the human protagonists are the expressive "supporting stars" of the film, the horses and the landscapes. Director Michele Rho's first feature film stars Vinicio Marchioni ("Romanzo Criminale") and Michele Alhaique ("Che bella giornata") in the lead roles.
