Capybaras - The Water Sprites Of Pantanal (28/268)

They live right in the heart of Brazil - capybaras aka water hogs, the largest rodents in the world. In Brazil they are known as the "lords of the grasses" for they are mainly to be found in the grasslands of Pantanal, the largest wetlands area in South America. Nowadays these sociable rodents are protected from hunting by humans, but in the wild Pantanal they have to live with other dangers. Gigantic snakes, caimans and the now rare jaguars are the main enemies of the water hogs there. The wood fox, too, is very partial to their offspring. Those who are lucky enough to survive an attack can heal their wounds in the family unit. The old animals in the group protect their little ones to the best of their ability. But what happens to the young capybara orphans? In the south of Brazil a dedicated protector of the species has financed a kind of Noah's Ark. Foundlings of all kinds are handed over there to the environmental authorities. There two young capybaras are being cared for by their surrogate mother, a young biologist, who teaches them everything they will need for a life in the wild. They even have to be taught to swim.
