On August 26th 1972, the eyes of the world were on Munich: it was the opening of the 20th Olympic summer games. Munich's Olympic Stadium was designed by the Stuttgart architect Günter Behnisch. The masterpiece of this stadium is the tent-like roof extending over more than 70,000 square kilometres. The actual building of the roof posed great problems - however, with the help of the architect and tent builder Frei Otto the unique cable-suspended roof was finally constructed. 34,000 square metres of cable were linked like nets and plates of acrylic glass were fitted between them. The stadium was finished three months before the opening of the games: with his unconventional tent-roof Frei Otto created a symbol for the future. Am 26. August 1972 blickt die Welt auf München: Es ist die Eröffnung der 20. Olympischen Sommerspiele. Der Entwurf des Münchner Olympiastadions stammt von dem Stuttgarter Architekten Günter Behnisch. Die Meisterleistung dieses Stadions ist das Zeltdach von mehr als 70 000 qm. Die Realisierung des Zeltdachs stellt große Probleme dar - mit Hilfe des Architekten und Zeltbauers Frei Otto gelingt es aber, mit einer einzigartigen Seilnetzkonstruktion das Zeltdach zu spannen. 34.000 Quadratmeter Seil werden zu Netzen verknüpft und Acrylglasplatten werden eingepasst. Drei Monate vor der Eröffnung ist das Stadion fertig: Mit seinem eigenwilligen Zeltdach hat Frei Otto ein Symbol für die Zukunft geschaffen.
