How do other European countries deal with their bears? Many people will have asked themselves this when, almost exactly a year ago, the brown bear Bruno trotted over the Bavarian border. The most impressive example is Romania. The brown predators have always existed in the Carpathians, and the people there react to them quite differently. A hotspot in dealing with the "neighbour bear" is the Carpathian city of Brasov. Each night over 30 bears- male, female and young ones - come down from the forests and forage in the garbage bins of the district of Racatau. Unimaginable - female bears with their young and food - a highly explosive combination. But for years nothing has happened. People found this activity quite normal, they still went for walks in the evening with their dogs - only a few metres away from the bears. Others have tried to make a profit out of the bears. Many of them were kept in tiny cages in front of guest houses to attract visitors. Their conditions were so heart-rending that Christina Lapsis finally established the largest bear park in Europe. All the animals who live here have a moving story to tell.
