They don't have far to go until they reach Germany - for wild brown bears live only three hours away from Munich. Once all of Europe was the home of the brown bears. Nowadays they have only a few places of refuge. Felix Heidinger tries to find out how near the bears really are and whether wild bears can be dangerous to people. In Austria these shaggy creatures have already been at home for ten years. Originally three animals were resettled in the wild, now there are over twenty - nobody knows exactly how many. But encounters with bears are still rare in this neighbouring country and are usually an exciting experience. Sometimes, however, bears do become a talking point. In Rumania people have many tales to tell about their bears. The animals no longer fear the lights of the city: every night they rummage through the garbage bins in search of food and the residents are entertained by this show. In Russia, on the other hand, bears avoid people for there they are still hunted. Not only by the locals, foreign trophy hunters also enjoy the chase.
