Angelique Todd from the Max Plank Institute for evolutionary anthropology in Leipzig and Cloé Cipoletta from the environmental foundation WWF (World Wildlife Fund) Germany have dedicated themselves to the research and protection of gorillas. Far removed from any form of civilisation, they live in a camp in the Dzanga-Sangha National Park in the south-west of the Central African Republic. Makumba, a huge silver-back male, is the head of a family of 16 gorillas. It took years for him to accept Angelique as an observer. The work of the researchers was constantly thwarted by various setbacks - such as malaria, poachers and attacks by wild elephants. But their dedication was worthwhile: the results of their research will contribute to the survival of the lowland gorillas.

Angélique Todd vom Max-Plank-Institut für evolutionäre Anthropologie in Leipzig und Cloé Cipoletta von der Umweltstiftung WWF-Deutschland haben sich die Erforschung und den Schutz der Gorillas als Lebensaufgabe gestellt. Fernab jeglicher Zivilisation leben sie in einem Camp im Dzanga-Sangha-Nationalpark im Südwesten der Zentralafrikanischen Republik. Makumba, ein riesiger Silberrücken-Mann, ist das Familienoberhaupt einer 16-köpfigen Gorillagruppe. Jahre hat es gedauert, bevor er Angélique als Beobachterin akzeptierte. Immer wieder wurde die Arbeit der Forscherinnen von Rückschlägen bedroht. Angriffe von Waldelefanten machten ihnen ebenso zu schaffen wie Malaria und Wilderer. Doch die Arbeit zahlte sich aus. Die Forschungsergebnisse werden zum Überleben der Flachlandgorillas beitragen.
