Katja is a physical therapist who lives on an old farm with her 8-year-old son Tobias and her unemployed and unstable live-in boyfriend Ju?rgen. When Tobias doesn't return from a playdate one evening, Katja's life comes unhinged. 
In a panic, Katja calls all the neighbors and then the police. Chief Inspector Roman has to cut his vacation short to take the case, being the only one on the local force with the psychological expertise for a case like this. As Katja's life spirals into a nightmare of waiting and dreading, Roman provides the support her drinking partner Ju?rgen doesn't. After the biggest manhunt in the history of the country yields no trace of Tobias, the horrible suspicion that a crime has occurred seems ever more certain. Katja sees no more sense in living, and Roman has his hands full keeping her from doing something terrible...
