Its coat reveals the origin of the mare: the colours of the steppe also shimmer from light loam to reddish-brown. And it was there in the steppe of Central Asia that, until half a century ago, the last real wild horses were to be found. But the mare named Chianti was born in the Munich Zoo - the descendant of a very few animals which came to Europe at the beginning of the last century and survived in zoos or breeding stations. Yet the zoo as an ark can be no more than interim solution. The experts agree that if Przwewalski's horse is to survive as a wild horse, then its ability to survive in the wild must be put to the test once again and this as soon as possible - preferably in the steppe and semi-desert of Central Asia. Chianti is now one of chosen few for a great plan. She and her herd were put together carefully and prepared for life outside the zoo on a pasture in the south of Munich. At the same time a new habitat was found for them in distant Kazakhstan. Soon the herd will have to exchange the lush Bavarian pastures for the bleak steppe. Yet the horses will be resettled in an environment for which their ancestors were optimised by evolution: the seemingly endless plains of Kazakhstan, limited only by "Altyn Emel", the so-called golden belt, a mountain range in the east of Kazakhstan.
