A Hedgehog in the Land of the Pharaohs

Hot sand, hardly any water and no shade - the desert is no place for a weakling. Only the best survive here. And the long-eared hedgehog is one of them. This is a portrait of a desert dweller.

Its feather-light weight allows it to almost hover over the desert ground. The large ears help him to sweat because the upper part of his body is covered with spines while his underbelly has a soft pelt. His excellent nose and large ears, which catch all the noises of the desert, lead him unerringly to his prey. The film follows the hedgehog's journey as it starts on the outskirts of Giza, past the famous pyramids and into the city center. In Egypt, long-eared hedgehogs are also popular as pets, because they love to munch on cockroaches of which there is an abundance here. We follow him as he continues his travels back into the desert and encounters bizarre, comical and frightening animals. The hedgehog watches as the venom of the Egyptian cobra is extracted, but then he is hunted by birds of prey and escapes into a sand cave. There he meets a comical gerbil, who like him, has opted for the cool accommodation in the ground. Fat-tailed gerbils who store food and water in their tails also live underground here.
