500 Years of Saint Peter's

1506-2006: - 500 years of the New St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome.

April 18th 1506 saw the beginning of the end for the almost 1200-year-old St. Peter's basilica on the Vatican Hill in Rome. For on this day, under the supervision of the chief architect Donato Bramante, the foundation stone was laid for a new St. Peter's Cathedral. In a sequence of bitter power struggles, shattering defeats and glorious triumphs Bramante, Sangallo, Raffael, Michelangelo, Maderno and Bernini created this world-famous centre of the Roman Catholic church. The Reformation and the Counter-Reformation might well have taken a quite different course without this building. Like a huge precious shell the dome envelops the humble tomb, buried within its depths, of the Apostle Peter, designated by Jesus to bear responsibility for the Christian faith. The documentary "Thou art Peter - and upon this rock I will build my church" describes the creation of a miracle.

Am 18. April 1506 war auf dem vatikanischen Hügel in Rom für die fast 1200 Jahre alte Basilika St. Peter der Anfang vom Ende gekommen. Denn an diesem Tag wurde unter Leitung des Chefarchitekten Donato Bramante der Grundstein für einen neuen Petersdom gelegt. In einer Abfolge von erbitterten Machtkämpfen, schweren Niederlagen und strahlenden Triumphen schaffen Bramante, Sangallo, Raffael, Michelangelo, Maderno und Bernini das weltberühmte Zentrum der Römisch-Katholischen Kirche. Reformation und Gegenreformation wären ohne dieses Bauwerk möglicherweise ganz anders verlaufen. Wie eine riesige, kostbare Schale umhüllt der Dom das tief in seiner Mitte geborgene kleine Armengrab des Apostels, dem Jesus alle Last auf die Schultern legte. Der Dokumentarfilm "Du bist Petrus, und auf diesen Felsen werde ich meine Kirche bauen." erzählt, wie ein Mirakel entstand.

The building of this famous church by the greatest Renaissance architects, such as Raffael and Michelangelo, was mired in power struggles, bitter defeats and glorious triumphs. It influenced both Reformation and Counter-Reformation. Its dome encases the humble tomb of the Apostle Peter, to whom Jesus said: "Thou art Peter - and upon this rock I will build my church". The film describes the creation of a miracle.
