Melisa has made the long journey from the sea to the mountains because she, like her grandfather before her, wants to work in the mines. To realize this dream, she disguises herself as a young man. When she tries to find work in a small principality, she becomes entangled in a dangerous game of intrigue: Prince Ingolf wants to abdicate and hand over the throne to his rightful heir, his daughter Sophia. But her evil Uncle Rudolf incites her brother Berthold, to take the throne for himself, because it is his right as a man. The plan: Kidnap Sophia and sell her off in a faraway land. But this is where Melisa barges in, and she succeeds in rescuing Sophia. The two young women become friends. However, when Melisa tries to tell Sophia the truth about her brother Berthold, and his plans, the pair argue. Sophia ends up in great danger, because the brother whom she continues to trust, still wants to be rid of her. Meanwhile, the legendary mountain troll Mehrich continues to hunt people. While he can assume any form, he struggles to understand human emotions. When Mehrich meets Melisa, he decides to observe her so that he can study humans. In this fairytale, everyone is lying to someone, as they all try to find the place they want in life: Melisa is pretending to be a man because she believes that only in this way can she work in mining. Prince Berthold feigns being a loving sibling because he wants the throne for himself. And Princess Sophia is deceiving herself because she does not trust in her own abilities to succeed her father. In the end, they all get past the clichés and stereotypes and discover where they truly belong.
