In "The Joys of Fatherhood", Oliver Wnuk alias Freddy Kleemann, learns that there are limits to the capacities of a loving father, caring son and committed pre-school manager. Even though a relationship crash is imminent, the nice-guy protagonist is finding it difficult to dial down the intensity of his exhausting multitasking life. In the third film of this high-ratings comedy series "Modern Dad", the focus also falls – sympathetically and realistically - on the topic of aging: while Freddy’s father must face his advancing dementia, his mother-in-law realizes that she does not want to let what time remains to her slip by.
Freddy Kleemann's (Oliver Wnuk) move from Konstanz to Berlin wasn't his choice and he's not really feeling the big city energy. While his heavily pregnant wife Juliana (Meike Droste) feels abandoned by him, his business partner Lara (Franziska Wulf) wants more commitment from him at their pre-school. Here it is not just the kids who must better embrace the innovative concept with quiet rooms, feelings are also running high among the parents, much to Freddy's disappointment.
He is deeply concerned about his father Fritz (Siemen Rühaak) who has been diagnosed with dementia. Freddy feels that their joint search for the right care facility for him could be their last father-son project together or at least the last his father will be aware of. And so, he wants to spend time with him and cherish all the precious moments. Freddy's mother-in-law Regina (Hedi Kriegeskotte) is a huge and much needed help to the Kleemanns. And while she enjoys being there for other people, she also wants something for herself. Perhaps a relationship would do her good? At least that's what her grandchildren Zoë (Sophie Reiling) and Niko (Max Günther) are thinking when they secretly put their grandma on an online dating platform …
