Chief Inspector Adam Raczek is called to Slubice, where workers disposing of construction waste have found the body of civil engineer Daniela Nowak. The investigation leads him to a building site in Cottbus. The victim worked there for Karl Winkler, who is redeveloping an entire residential block as part of a large construction project. Initially it is unclear where and why the woman was killed. One thing is certain, however: the young woman's apartment in Frankfurt (Oder) was searched shortly before her death.

Initial investigations lead to a rented car, which was spotted by a neighbor outside the victim's home during the time frame of the murder. Zvi Spielmann and his daughter Maja Spielmann from Israel admit to having arranged to meet with the victim but claim that Daniela Nowak did not show up. Allegedly, she had important documents relating to a restitution claim being asserted by Zvi Spielmann. The ownership status of the house built by Zvi's father had still not been clarified almost 80 years after the end of the war. Elisabeth Behrend, who grew up in the house, and her son Jakob had also been in contact with Daniela Nowak, insisting that they were the rightful owners. The investigation turns up further documents, which were in Daniela Nowak's possession, that appear to prove this. Was the victim playing both parties off against each other?

This case also takes Adam Raczek back to his own past. At police headquarters in Cottbus, he meets his former colleague Alexandra Luschke and his former department head Markus Oelßner, who clearly has no interest in assisting Adam's investigation.
