After thinking long and hard about her options, Chief Inspector Olga Lenski has decided to make a career change and leave the service. It was not an easy decision to make; the only person she has told is her department head Karol Pawlak. Her original plan – to use all the vacation days she had accumulated just hanging out with her daughter, so that she can then quickly and painlessly take her leave of her colleagues – has been frustrated by an incredibly difficult situation: In Frankfurt (Oder), an employee of the youth welfare office has been brutally and fatally assaulted and Karol Pawlak has ordered Olga to return from her holidays.

Adam Raczek is furious and also disappointed when he learns that his partner is leaving the force. When did she plan to tell him? His trust in his colleague has been shaken and it leads to conflict between the two. But Adam knows that he cannot do without Olga on this case. The young culprit, whose identity and motives are initially unknown, has fled. She appears to be extremely violent and dangerous.

When the getaway car is found, the detectives find the first clue which reveals the identity of the fugitive: Her name is Louisa Bronski; she had just been released from prison on the morning of the assault after serving a two-year sentence. The only person that Lenski and Raczek can question is her mother, Nicole Bronski, but she had no contact with her daughter while she was inside.

Among the handful of people who did visit Louisa in prison is a lawyer by the name of Hannwacker. Olga Lenski decides to visit him to find out where Louisa may be hiding. But Olga does not return from the interview and Adam and her colleagues are seriously concerned because she is not answering her calls either. When the police arrive at the lawyer's office and find him seriously injured having sustained a gunshot wound, it is clear that Olga Lenski is in danger. Where is Olga; has she been taken or worse?
