16-year-old Larissa is unexpectedly pregnant and refuses to tell her parents who the child's father is. When the doctors diagnose a trisomy 18 in the unborn child and an abortion is no longer legally possible, the desperate 16-year-old decides to take her own life. Larissa wants to throw herself off a bridge. Suddenly a strange young man, Jonas, appears on the bridge and succeeds in preventing Larissa's desperate act.
Larissa arrives at a hospital in Frankfurt (Oder), where a late abortion is to be performed. Driven by delusions, Jonas manages to get into the operating theatre: He feels called upon to save the life of the unborn child. As if by remote control, he cuts the baby out of Larissa's stomach. When commissioners Olga and Adam arrive at the scene, the young woman is in mortal danger. The child is, contrary to all predictions, in perfect health. The police are working at full speed to find Jonas. The news from forensic scientist Marian that Larissa was still a virgin makes a secular explanation almost impossible.
Adam is also privately put to a severe test: After five years his mother Agnieszka suddenly appears at his door and tells him that she is seriously ill and will not live much longer. Adam does not want to accept his mother's religious devotion and fights against the illness - using the means of modern medicine.
