Simon's brief kidnapping and release at the hands of strangers leads to major changes in Berko’s domestic life: Simon, Julianne and her new husband, Robert, decide to go live for a while in the United States where Julianne will return to work as a journalist. Berkowitz knows that they are doing the right thing, but he cannot leave Chile, not now that Colonel Mendel has been found dead in the river with a bullet in his temple. The police are calling it a suicide, but Berko insists that it was murder. The newspaper refuses to publish Berko's story however, as he has no evidence of the murder. Berko is unwilling to endorse the official lie, and decides to resign once he learns that the newspaper’s financial problems are about to be solved by a timely and hefty cash injection from an important businessman, who turns out to be none other than Rulfo. Now hunted and alone, without escape or guarantees of any kind, Berko and Daniela leave the apartment and lock themselves in a hotel waiting for the worst. Lara meets with them to help them plan an escape route. Daniela has the option of accepting Almarza's offer and becoming a witness for the Spanish prosecutor’s office in its arms trafficking case against their main suspect, Nasir Al Khatib, a cousin of Assad. It’s her only real chance of survival. But Almarza now wants the jackpot: Augusto Pinochet's business dealings and his secret accounts in international banks. In desperation Berko, Daniela and Lara try to cross the border into Argentina but their escape does not go smoothly. In a world where the brotherhood networks cross all borders, no one is safe and there is nowhere to hide. Not even the truth can save them.
