In 1977, a passenger plane crashes. The sole survivor is a three-month-old baby. But there were two little girls of the same age on board, Emilie Vitral and Lyse-Rose Carville. The grandparents of the two babies fight to gain custody of the miracle child and Chief Inspector Monod heads up the enquiry. Justice renders its verdict: "Lili" is entrusted to the Vitrals, as they did not find the bracelet on her that the Carville grandparents had given Lyse-Rose and that she wore constantly.

In 1998, Lili, now a young woman, realises that she is pregnant and receives a mysterious message from Jacques Monod: "We were mistaken as to your origins from the very beginning!" Lili must at all costs shed light on her origins. The child she is carrying is the fruit of an impossible romance with Marc Vitral and she now nurtures the secret hope that he is not her brother.
