When Marlene finds out about Martin’s debts, she offers to bail him out with the party money she’s embezzled. But Martin has a hard time taking dirty money.
Petra is torn between pity and spite for Falk. Finally, she asks him to prove he’s changed. Katja doggedly tries to track down the party money. Vera urges Bernd Krohnak to talk to her, and he tips her off about how West German conglomerates cooperated with the Stasi. The next morning, Falk’s boss Herrmann von Stein tells him they have to prevent journalist Katja Wiese from publishing her article. Falk knows von Stein will stop at nothing, and is worried. He tries to warn Katja, but can only get ahold of Martin, who wants to know what he wants from Katja. Katja is on her way to talk to a source when a car runs her off the road.
When Martin wants to accept his mother’s offer, he finds out she doesn’t have the money anymore. Marlene couldn’t bear to see Hans accused of murder, so she gave Gaucke the money for a file proving Hans acted in self-defense. Major Rothals has returned to Berlin, shows up at Falk’s. He wants to keep his past from catching up to him. Falk spends the night with Petra and reaches a decision.
