The Rhön is often described as the land of open spaces. For no other low mountain range in Germany is this description better suited than it is for the Rhön. From the mountaintops, you can let your gaze wander in all directions across the countryside. This biosphere reserve is home to black storks in primal beech forests; there are also basalt columns, mysterious moors and glacial scree slopes. Overhead birds of prey circle; birds like eagle owls and Montague's harrier, which are rare nowadays. Its central geographical location at the heart of Europe and the ideal network of open and forested habitats also make the Rhön a key node for migrating animal species like the lynx and wildcat.
