At 2962 meters, the Zugspitze is the highest peak in Germany, a popular subject for postcard pictures and the epitome of mass tourism. However it also has many unknown facets and a very serious side: scorching heat, biting cold and violent storms, floods and the onslaughts of winter are all part of life here. The film is a fascinating journey from the valley floor across the torrents up to the peak, documenting the wealth of life here right up to the inhospitable summit zones, where the plants and animals must adapt to survive. As it is the only place in Germany to rise into the regions of permanent ice, the most elaborate film ever made about the Zugspitze also tells of its glaciers, which will largely disappear in just a few short years due to global warming.
