INSPECTOR JURY, his (formerly) noble friend MELROSE PLANT and Sergeant WIGGINS are faced with a particularly sticky case. In Rackmoor, a picturesque port town in Yorkshire, a woman dressed like a harlequin is found murdered.
The dead woman is Dillys March, the adopted daughter of wealthy shipowner Titus Crael, who disappeared fifteen years ago and recently returned to the fold of her family. Either that or she was a very talented con artist posing as Dillys.
At first, the inspector focuses on family heir Julian Crael, who stood to lose the most from the woman's reappearance. Cafe owner Lily had a strong motive, too, blaming the victim for her mother's suicide. But then it turns out they both had an alibi, unlike the shipowner's housekeeper, who could have taken revenge on Dillys for her son winding up in the asylum.
Then the housekeeper turns up dead, too. Only cantakerous painter Rees is left as a suspect, who was going on about how to commit the perfect crime in the very night of the murder.
In the end, Jury realizes victims can be culprits, and the de facto culprit a victim.
