In the Hainich National Park in Thuringia - Germany's largest contiguous deciduous forest - dying and dead trees create excellent living conditions for an extraordinary variety of species. The dead wood can rot slowly here, offering a habitat for countless insects, fungi and rare mosses. Largely undisturbed by human activity, shy wild cats, badgers and foxes make their home in the Hainich, one of the last ancient beech forests in Europe and thus also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
